There was a range of creative products on display ranging across seven design categories – Architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport.

Some of the products on show included the Folding Plug by Min-Kyu Choi, Grassworks by Jair Straschnow, a furniture collection of flat-pack, self-assembly structures and The Newspaper Club, UK. Created by Ben Terrett, Russell Davies and Ton Taylor and supported by 4iP but to name a few of the products that were available for viewing allowing us to take a closer look at the UK design industry’s greatest achievements.

The Unilever Series – Miroslaw Balka

Afterwards, we visited the exhibition of Miroslaw Balka’s box of darkness at the Tate Modern.

Walking into the large space that is the Turbine hall we were greeted by a giant grey steel structure which seems to effortlessly fill the great space. Walking underneath it you can hear the echoing sound of footsteps on steel and the sound of children’s laughter as they run around the large steel posts that support the great weight of the structure.

You enter via a ramp into a pitch black interior, which to the eye seems to be spanning on into darkness swallowing up any light that seems to enter the interior of the box . We found ourselves bumping into the throngs of people, exploring the darkness using our sense of touch, arms stretched out wide, feet shuffling along uneasily until suddenly you find yourself bumping into a solid wall that is the back of the steel structure,which surprisingly is soft and velvet like a contrast to the cold steel which can be felt on the boxes exterior.

Looking back to the entrance that is Miroslaw’s black box it’s surprising to find that the long journey you feel you have taken in the dark in fact doesn’t span as far back as you originally think. As your eyes begin to adjust it’s amusing to watch the silhouettes of the people trying to traverse their way through the darkness, each person experiencing their own journey through the dark.

The palace is split into sections ranging from the great hall built before Henry VIII’s time to the Georgian apartments in use until quite recently. The gardens and maze were included in the price of the ticket so we spent close to a full day exploring every nook and cranny of the apartments, maze and grounds. The tour took us through the great kitchens, halls and into Wolsey’s rooms before back out into the courtyard enclosed by the chapel and apartments.

Although quiet for February the palace was running events across the whole day relating to Henry VIII’s marriage to Kateryn Parr. We managed to get swept up in a crowd of followers, @lauraakalemon and I were split into guys & girl groups and headed off to the Kings Privy council chamber. This was a brilliant piece of acting from the cast, where we were able to ask Henry questions about his marriage, the country, taxes and war in France. This lead onto the marriage of Henry and Kateryn in private.

Once this was over we finished the day by walking through the maze and grounds. However it was marred slightly by my ‘ol faithful Clio breaking down and needing a tow home.
